The sequel to Guerilla’s hit game Horizon Dawn Zero had new gameplay shown off recently, and this was not just a standard trailer, but a dedicated state of play update on the upcoming game. It showed off many improvements and new ideas altogether in its 19-minute video.
It starts off showcasing a cutscene with dialogue between two characters and I am hoping that we get more small cutscenes between characters when conversing instead of a bland static shot over the shoulder of two characters talking like in the first game. Zero Dawn had cutscenes, but there were moments when it did the over-the-shoulder method and it looked very jarring compared to the fluid and alive open world.
We also got to see new means of traversal in way of a new grapple hook tool for combat and movement as well as a paraglider that Aloy can use when falling or jumping from great heights. Swimming was something that the first game had but the trailer shows off the new underwater areas of the game and how they might add new gameplay spaces for the player.
Melee combat looks to make a return with an overhaul. Gone is the hack and slash awkward nature of melee combat from the first game, replaced by a more fluid and involved system that looks to reward creativity in the player’s approach.
The new setting of the forbidden west looks beautiful and the decision to take the game to a new locale, instead of adding more to the areas we already know from Zero Dawn was a smart move. The presentation of the setting with its beaches, jungles, reefs, and new enemy types are all working towards a game that could outshine the original if the story matches its gameplay.
Hope you are looking forward to getting your hands on this game as much as we are. Check out the full video below and tell us what you think!
