After a delay from its intended Spring 2021 release date, we have finally gotten an overview of The Skywalker Saga as well as a release date of April 5th, 2022. When I saw that this game got an overview video I knew we were in for some big changes to what we have seen in LEGO games before, specifically with Star Wars and the video did not disappoint. The big changes that stand out are improvements to combat. Where in past LEGO games you would simply swing the lightsaber or shoot in the direction of the enemy with a blaster, The Skywalker Saga is bringing with it an over-the-shoulder perspective with a reticle that will let us aim as we fire. There also is a cover system in place, combo moves to deal big damage to enemies, and counter-attacks that are specific to certain character classes. The Jedi get an overhaul too, with full use of the force when moving objects, fighting enemies, or even “influencing” over characters.
Another big improvement is planet exploration. Playing through the trilogies will allow you to visit and explore fan-favorite planets and find collectibles to upgrade different classes of characters. These upgrades play into the new class-based system that with every upgrade will make that class stronger. All of this coupled with the fact there are 300+ characters to unlock and nine movies to play through makes this game look like a gift for star wars fans, and as someone who played these games growing up, I am looking forward to its release on April 5th.
